Abstract
The results of routine retreatment for pulmonary tuberculosis at Health Centres were assessed in patients who hate failed to first line chemotherapy. Out of 214 Health Centres, 51 Centres were selected randomly. 1033 patients have registered and treated at above mentioned 51 Centres from 1 December 78 through 30 November 79. For the purpose of detailed assessment, patients were chosen who have registered to retreatment in December 78, March, June, and September 1979 respectively. Thus, 330 patients became the. subjects of present analyses.
The regimens were:
ERZ ethamtutol (12 months) plus rifampicin (12 months) plus pyrazinamide (12 months) ; EZK ethambutol (24 months) plus pyrazinamide (12 months) plus kanamycin (6 months) ; RZK rifampicin (12 months) plus pyrazinamide (12 months) plus kanamycin (6 months) ; and ERK ethamtutol (12 months) plus rifampicin (12 months) plus kanamycin (6 months). As assessed at 12 months, a bacteriologically favourable response was achieved in 104(87%) of 120 ERZ, 12(63%) of 19 EZK, 60(71%) of 84 RZK, and 21(88%) of 24 ERK in patients with pretreatment sensitivity to relevant drugs. The untoward reactions were not significant. The premature departure from the retreatment was 19% during one year of treatment, which was lower than that of the routine initial treatment at Health Centres.
